Theraplay in Roanoke, VA

Building connection, safety, and stronger relationships between children and their caregivers.
Sometimes children need more than individual therapy.
When a child has experienced disrupted attachment, foster care or adoption, anxiety, significant stress, or other difficult experiences, healing can happen through the relationship between the child and the important adults in their life.
Theraplay® is a dyadic child and family therapy that focuses on strengthening the relationship between a child and caregiver through playful, engaging, and nurturing interactions.
Rather than having the child play independently with toys while the therapist observes, Theraplay brings the child and caregiver together to build connection, trust, safety, and emotional regulation.
At Mindful Mountain Wellness Center, Theraplay is available for children ages 2 to 10.
What Is Theraplay?
Theraplay is a relationship-based therapy that focuses on strengthening the attachment between children and their caregivers.
Developed more than 50 years ago, Theraplay is an evidence-based practice recognized by the Association for Play Therapy as one of the seminal psychotherapies for children and is practiced internationally.
In Theraplay sessions, the therapist guides the caregiver and child through playful games, developmentally appropriate challenges, and nurturing activities designed to strengthen their relationship.
The goal is to help children experience their caregiver as a source of:
-
Safety
-
Connection
-
Joy
-
Comfort
-
Predictability
-
Support
Through these interactions, children can develop a greater sense of security while caregivers learn new ways to connect with and support their child.
Building Relationships Through Play
Theraplay is different from traditional play therapy.
There are no toys in Theraplay sessions.
Instead, the therapist guides the caregiver and child through simple, interactive activities that center on their relationship.
Activities may involve movement, eye contact, rhythm, playful interaction, nurturing touch, following one another's lead, and developmentally appropriate challenges.
The therapist intentionally structures these activities around four areas:
Engagement
Helping the child and caregiver experience enjoyment, connection, and shared attention.
Challenge
Helping children experience appropriate challenges while knowing that their caregiver is there to support them.
Nurture
Providing experiences of comfort, care, acceptance, and emotional safety.
Structure
Helping children experience predictable boundaries, organization, and a caregiver who can confidently take the lead.
Helping Children Feel Safe and Connected
A strong caregiver-child relationship can provide an important foundation for emotional development and resilience.
Theraplay helps caregivers become more attuned to their child's emotional needs and gives them opportunities to practice responding in ways that communicate:
"You are safe."
"I am here with you."
"We can handle this together."
Over time, these experiences can help children develop greater trust, security, and confidence within their relationships.
Helping Parents Co-Regulate With Their Child
Children often need help from their caregivers to manage big emotions and settle their nervous systems.
In Theraplay, caregivers learn practical ways to co-regulate with their child rather than simply trying to stop or control difficult emotions.
Caregivers learn how to:
-
Recognize when their child is becoming overwhelmed
-
Help their child settle and regulate
-
Respond to big behaviors with connection and playfulness
-
Set appropriate limits while maintaining connection
-
Follow their child's emotional cues
-
Create greater predictability and safety
-
Strengthen positive interactions
The goal is to learn how to set limits while remaining connected to your child.

Theraplay can also be incorporated into family therapy when strengthening relationships and connection is an important part of treatment.
What Does a Theraplay Session Look Like?
Theraplay sessions are active and interactive.
Rather than spending the session talking about your child's behavior, you and your child will participate in activities together while the therapist guides and coaches the interaction.
Activities are selected based on your child's developmental level and therapeutic needs.
Your therapist may guide you through activities involving:
-
Movement
-
Rhythm and songs
-
Playful interaction
-
Nurturing activities
-
Developmentally appropriate challenges
-
Shared attention
-
Connection and cooperation
The therapist watches the relationship closely and helps you understand what your child may be communicating through their behavior and how you can respond in ways that build connection and security. Every 3 sessions, the Therapist will meet with the caregivers alone to fine-tune Theraplay skills, discuss how things are going at home, and patterns seen in Theraplay.
How Long Does Theraplay Take?
Theraplay is a relationship-focused treatment, and meaningful changes take time.
Treatment is typically 6 months to 1 year, although the length of treatment varies depending on the needs of the child and family.
Your therapist will regularly assess progress and work with you to determine the appropriate course of treatment.
Theraplay vs. Child-Centered Play Therapy
Both Theraplay and child-centered play therapy use play therapeutically, but they have different focuses.
Child-centered play therapy primarily provides the child with a therapeutic space to express and process their experiences through play.
Theraplay is focused on the relationship between the child and caregiver. The caregiver actively participates in the session, with the therapist guiding interactions designed to strengthen attachment, connection, regulation, and safety.
Your therapist can help determine which approach, or combination of approaches, is most appropriate for your child.
Helping Families Build Stronger Connections
When a child's behavior is challenging, it can be easy for family interactions to become focused on correcting behavior.
Theraplay creates opportunities to experience something different.
Connection comes first.
Through playful, nurturing, and structured interactions, caregivers and children can learn new ways of relating to one another and build a stronger foundation for emotional health.
At Mindful Mountain Wellness Center, we use Theraplay to help families strengthen attachment, support regulation, and create relationships where children can feel safe, connected, and cared for.
