Teen Therapy in Roanoke, VA
Helping teens navigate big emotions, difficult experiences, relationships, and the challenges of growing up.
Being a teenager can be complicated. Teens are developing their identity, becoming more independent, navigating friendships and relationships, managing school expectations, and learning how to handle increasingly complex emotions.
When a teen is struggling, it can be difficult for both the teenager and their parents or caregivers to know what kind of support they need.
At Mindful Mountain Wellness Center, we provide individual therapy for teens in Roanoke, Salem, Botetourt and surrounding areas, in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Here, adolescents can develop a better understanding of themselves, learn practical skills, and work through challenges at their own pace.
What Does Teen Therapy Look Like?
Teen therapy does not always look like sitting in a chair and talking for the entire session.
We recognize that teenagers communicate and process experiences in different ways. Depending on the teen's age, personality, interests, and treatment goals, therapy may incorporate creative and experiential activities alongside conversation.
Sessions may include:
-
Conversation and reflection
-
Art and creative activities
-
Board games
-
Therapeutic games
-
Sand tray activities
-
Drawing or other expressive activities
-
Mindfulness and grounding exercises
-
Emotional regulation skills
-
Problem-solving activities
-
Cognitive and behavioral strategies
-
Trauma-focused interventions
-
Family involvement when appropriate
These activities are not simply distractions or ways to make therapy more entertaining. They can provide another way for teens to express themselves, explore emotions, practice communication, build relationships, and work through difficult experiences.

For some teens, talking directly about a difficult topic can feel uncomfortable or overwhelming. An activity can create a more natural starting point for conversation and allow the therapist to connect with the teen in a way that feels comfortable and developmentally appropriate.

Your teen's therapist will choose activities intentionally based on the teen's needs and treatment goals. Some sessions may involve a lot of conversation, while others may involve an activity that helps the teen engage, communicate, practice a skill, or explore something they're working through.

Therapy That Meets Teens Where They Are
Some sessions may involve a lot of conversation. Other sessions may involve a board game, creating something together, working in the sand tray, or using another activity as part of the therapeutic process.

There is no single "right way" for a teenager to participate in therapy.

Our goal is to create a space where teens can be themselves while developing the skills and insight they need to navigate the challenges they are facing.
