Child-Centered Play Therapy

Helping children work through big feelings through play and connection

When children struggle with emotions or behaviors, they may not have the words to explain what is happening inside. Child-centered play therapy offers a way to express themselves, feel understood, and grow.

What Is Child-Centered Play Therapy?

Child-centered play therapy (CCPT) is an evidence-based approach that helps children express emotions, process experiences, and develop emotional well-being.

CCPT works with your child’s developmental stage, recognizing that their ability to understand and talk about feelings is still growing. Play allows children to process emotions nonverbally, without needing to explain their experiences in words.

Through a trusting relationship with their therapist, children have space to explore challenges and develop emotional awareness, confidence, and self-regulation at their own pace.

How Can CCPT Help?

CCPT can support children experiencing anxiety, emotional distress, big behaviors, and difficulty regulating emotions. Goals may include:

  • Understanding and expressing feelings

  • Managing frustration and big emotions

  • Building confidence and self-esteem

  • Developing problem-solving abilities

  • Strengthening relationships with others

Growth develops through the child’s own experiences in play and the therapeutic relationship.

Parents and Caregivers Are Part of the Process

Regular parent consultations provide time to share concerns, discuss progress, and explore ways to support your child outside the playroom. You know your child in ways no one else does. Parent and caregiver meetings provide space to share concerns, discuss progress, and explore ways to support your child at home.

Together, we can work on understanding your child’s emotions, responding to challenging moments, and setting limits with warmth and consistency.

Getting Started

You do not need to know exactly what your child is feeling before seeking support. If your child is struggling with big emotions, challenging behaviors, or everyday experiences, we can help you explore whether CCPT is a good fit.
