Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
in Roanoke, VA

Strengthening the parent-child relationship while helping families navigate challenging behaviors.
When your child's behavior feels overwhelming, it can be difficult to know what to do. Frequent tantrums, defiance, aggression, emotional outbursts, or constant power struggles can leave parents feeling frustrated and unsure of themselves.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps parents strengthen their relationship with their child while learning practical strategies for managing challenging behaviors.
Unlike traditional therapy where parents may spend most of the session talking with a therapist about what happens at home, PCIT gives parents the opportunity to practice skills with their child while receiving live coaching from their therapist.

At Mindful Mountain Wellness Center, PCIT may be offered in the office or, when clinically appropriate, in your home. PCIT is offered for children ages 2 to 7 who meet our program criteria.
How Does PCIT Work?
PCIT takes place while you and your child interact and play together. Your therapist observes and provides real-time coaching using "bug-in-ear" technology, allowing the therapist to communicate privately with you while you practice new skills.

You aren't just talking about parenting strategies. You are practicing them with your child while your therapist coaches you.

Child-Directed Interaction
Parents learn how to follow their child's lead during play and strengthen the parent-child relationship through positive attention, praise, reflection, and emotional connection.

Parent-Directed Interaction
Parents learn practical strategies for setting limits, giving effective directions, responding to challenging behaviors, and using consistent discipline.

The goal is to create a healthier balance of connection, positive attention, and appropriate boundaries.
What Can PCIT Help With?
PCIT may be helpful for children experiencing:
-
Frequent tantrums
-
Defiance or refusal
-
Aggressive behaviors
-
Difficulty following directions
-

In-Home PCIT
When appropriate, PCIT may be provided in your home, allowing you to practice skills in the environment where many everyday parenting challenges occur.

Your therapist can provide live coaching while you interact with your child during familiar activities and routines.

Who Is PCIT For?
At Mindful Mountain Wellness Center, our PCIT program is currently designed for:
-
Children ages 2 to 7
-
Children who are living with their biological or legal caregivers and are not currently in foster care or adopted
An initial evaluation will help determine whether PCIT is an appropriate fit for your child and family.

If PCIT isn't the right fit, we can discuss other therapy and parent-support options that may better meet your family's needs, such as Theraplay or Child-Centered Play Therapy.

You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone
Parenting a child with big emotions or challenging behaviors can be exhausting. PCIT gives you the opportunity to learn new skills with your child and with a therapist supporting you in real time.

Our goal is to help you feel more confident, strengthen your relationship with your child, and create more positive interactions at home.
